What is the Prophetic Word?
For believers to understand the prophetic word is that it is essential to understand the background of 2 Peter 1:19-21. As we begin to look at previous verses in 2 Peter 1:16-18, it is also essential to understand what took place when the apostle Peter experience along with the other apostles during Christ's transfiguration. Unfortunately, many professing believers have taken the biblical concept of the "prophetic word" by putting a spin by which they have totally redefined such biblical terminology. The whole idea of the prophetic word has been made to believe that God gives such personal "revelations" to those who claim to be God's mouthpiece by which it is inaccessible to the Church as a whole. Is what these self-proclaimed modern-day prophets within the contemporary church today "unique" in the sense that it is revelatory in nature by which it is outside the boundaries of God's Word? What is the "specific" knowledge and experience of many professing Christian teachers that are diametrically opposed to the fount of the knowledge of God in Christ Jesus? Is such "specific" knowledge connected with ancient Gnosticism or Gnostics throughout the early first and second-century churches during the times of the apostles? The fact of the matter that ancient Gnosticism have in fact reared that of its ugly head by which to compete with historic biblical Christianity and the historic Christian church to appear that it is in agreement with the Church's teaching (e.g., the divinity of Christ) but who seek to undermine the true faith and the moral lives of God's people (2 Tim. 2:17-18) As we begin to look into the historical background of 2 Peter 1:19-21 is that it is very important we understand 2 Peter 1:16-18 by which it states, "For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. There are many professing Christian leaders who claim that they have had personal encounter by having a "intimate" relationship with God. They seek to go into details about what they experience and the extraordinary conversation they had with God. They also claim to seen something when they ain't seen nothing. They take pride in their so-called supposedly "revelations" by which they claim such humility but it is based upon such false humility. What these pseudo-teachers tell others within the church today is their false claim as to have seen God as well as talk with God. Their message is not consistent with their calling by which they are false messengers by which they went but not sent from God Himself. They seek to elevate their own pseudo-experience by which it goes contrary to the truth of God's Word (2 Pet. 1:20). There is a huge difference between that of the apostles in the NT as opposed to false teachers in the church today (2 Pet. 2:1-2ff). The NT apostles were in fact eyewitnesses of Christ's resurrection by which their message was consistent with what they were teaching. False teachers who called themselves super-apostles, prophets, and prophetess claim to transcend that of the NT apostles concerning miracles, signs, and wonders as well as their so-called spiritual "revelations."
When is comes to the "prophetic word" or more sure word of prophecy is that God's Word is completely reliable by which it is important to pay attention to every word of scripture. There is nothing that can be added to the prophecy of scripture because everything that the church needs to know pertaining to life and godliness is within the written Word of God. Also when it comes to the nature of the prophecy of scripture is that it is a light that shines in a dark place, the day dawn, and the morning star arises within believers hearts. The prophetic word or prophecy of scripture is a lamp unto the believer's path by which they are able to comprehend the truth of God's Word by the illuminating work and power of the Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:26). When it comes to such false prophecy, prophetic word, and personal "revelations" that is promoted and perpetuated by false teachers is that is led astray the unstable souls of men into such dark path. Paul the apostle fought bitterly against mysticism in the early church (Col. 2:18, 19). Christian mystics are individuals who claim to have seen the Light by which to tell the church about what they have experience. The "experience" of Gnostics in the professing church today is based upon such "mere" experience by which it is no experience at all. Thus, the knowledge and experience of Christian mystics is their source of authority; not the authority of the Bible. Whenever they are challenged in regards to their knowledge and experience is that they immediately go into neutrality so as to their "newfound" faith. Their basis of knowledge and experience is very much superfluous by which it is devoid of the objective truth of the Bible. The prophecy of scripture is not through the "private" interpretation of men but that it is inspired by the Holy Spirit. God's Word is not manufactured by men but manufactured by the Holy Spirit: that is there were "holy" men of God who were under the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Pet. 1:21; 2 Tim. 3:16).
In conclusion we as God's people have a more sure word of prophecy by which we can trust in what God's Word says. There is nothing that is to added unto the prophecy of scripture. For anyone to add or to take away from God's Word is to envision God's divine judgment (Rev. 22:18-19). When it comes to that of the prophetic word is that it is important that we as believers pay attention to every word in scripture (2 Tim. 3:16). The nature of the prophecy of scripture is that it shed light within the mind and hearts of God's people but the personal "revelations" of false teachers is to lead people astray from the confidence that is in God's Word. False prophecies, prophetic utterance, and personal "revelations" within a person's human spirit are doctrine taught by demons (1 Tim. 4:1). What the Church possess is the all-sufficiency, inspired, inerrant Word of God. Also, the prophecy of scripture is not interpret by man's own interpretation (2 Pet. 1:20). God's Word was not manufactured by men but holy men of God who were under the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Everything that the church needs to know pertaining to life and godliness is within God's written Word. The Church possess what is true spiritual knowledge but Gnostics in the professing church today possess such "fleshly" knowledge (Col. 1:9, 10; 2:18-19). It behooves us as God's people to trust in what God's Word says; not to rely upon those who claim to give a "prophetic" word or to give "a word" to the church today.
